History of the Cell / Mobile Phone

How It Began – The First Mobile Telephone Call
On the 3rd April 1973 Martin Cooper made the first mobile telephone call using handheld equipment.
Martin was a Researcher and Executive at Motorola in the United States. A rival company was Bell Labs and who better for Martin to make this first call to than his rival Dr Joel S Engel at Bell. The call lasted 30 minutes.
Mobile Cell Phone Prototype
Compare this to the Cell Mobile Phones of today. The prototype handheld phone in 1973 weighed 1.1 kg or (2.4 lb). The size was 23 x2 3 x 4.5 cm or (9.1 x 5.1 x 1.8 inches).

Ultraviolet Light
The meaning of “Ultraviolet” is “beyond violet” (from the Latin ultra, “beyond”) with the highest frequencies of visible light being coloured violet. Ultraviolet has a shorter wavelength and higher frequency than violet light.
Germs, Bacteria and Viruses
Ultraviolet Light can kill germs, bacteria, mold and viruses.
Frequencies Of Light
In simple terms Ultraviolet Light is based on ranges of frequencies of light.
The three bands range from 100 to 400 nm. NM stands for nanometer. For those that really want to know a nanometer is equal to one billionth of a metre (0.000000001 m).
The three ranges are UVC (100-280 nm) UVB (280-315 nm) UVA (315-400 nm).
The one required for killing bacteria and viruses is called UVC. This short-wavelength UVC when reaching the scale of approximately 250 has been found to be the most effective at killing germs, bacteria, mold and viruses.
Discovery
1801 – The German physicist Johann Wilhelm Ritter is attributed to the discovery of UV radiation.
He found that invisible rays beyond the violet and visible end of the spectrum caused silver chloride soaked paper to darken more quickly than the violet light itself.
Later work by others and most notably John William Draper maintained that UV radiation was entirely different from light.
1878 – The sterilizing effects of short-wavelength light was discovered.
1893 – German physicist Victor Schumann discovered that ultraviolet radiation with wavelengths below 200 nm
is strongly absorbed by the oxygen in air. This is called “vacuum ultraviolet”.
1903 – Further research by 1903 found that the most effective wavelengths for killing germs and bacteria was in the region of 250 nanometers.
Today UV light is used in hospitals, nursing homes and other places where there is a need to sterilize items.
