Jewellery has been a part of the history of mankind since man was created many thousands of years ago.
However it bore no resemblance of what we understand about jewellery today.
It was made of bones, teeth, feathers, coloured stones and shells. The coloured stones were sometimes what we know as gems today.
Mediterranean Jewellery
In Iran and the Mediterranean jewellery was used to dress statues and as offerings to the gods.
Mummies have been found in the Royal Tombs in ancient Sumner (Royal Cemetery at Ur) encrusted with every imaginable type of jewellery. Necklaces, earrings, rings, crowns and headdresses were found. These tombs date back to 3000 BC.
It should not be underestimated how much society has changed but also how small things of value or no value mean so much to people. What one person values another may not. This not just in monetary terms.
Value Or No Value
An example of this is that some years ago my wife and I were on vacation in Europe.
There was a workman nearby where we were staying repairing the roads. He was out in the hot sun and we simply gave him a bottle of water.
It turned out that he could not read or write or communicate very well. However we got to know that he had a wife and young daughter.
It was also very apparent that he was as poor as a Church mouse.
Birthdays!
The subject of ages and birthdays must have come up because 10 days later he turned up on my birthday with a present.
It was a small green cloth bag neatly tied at the top with stones inside.
I did not immediately realize the significance of this and thought it very odd thing to give as a present. I thanked him very much.
Later, I closely examined the bag and the stones.
It was then that I realized that the bag was hand stitched. It contained just ordinary stones that can be found in any garden or on a beach.
However these stones were different. They were highly polished.
I later found out that he made and stitched the bag together himself. He had then go on to spend many hours polishing each individual stone until they shone.
This was a present to my wife and myself, given on my birthday in appreciation of a simple of act of kindness of giving him a bottle of water and treating him with respect as an equal. This from someone who had nothing.
This was as valuable to him giving as it is to me/us receiving.
Unless you have been in this position you will have no idea how much I/we value that present from someone who had nothing.
We still have that bag and the stones to this day.

Coloured Gems & Diamonds
The coloured gems started to be worn as adornments. Much later in about the 1300´s in Europe they discover how to cut diamonds to display the brilliance.
Pins & Brooches
Pins and brooches were used to hold clothing together and then developed into jewellery and fashion items.
Rings
Rings started as personal seals to press into the wax for documents and letters.
Pendants
Pendants were used as early signs of identity. They then became a status symbol to denote rank, authority and class.
Trophies
Hunters wore some as trophies to denote that they were good hunters. These were made of horns, bones, teeth and claws. Today trophies in most sports are cups and shields.

Early Jewellery
The earliest recorded finding of jewellery is of a fish bone necklace that was found in a cave in Monaco. It is believed to be about 25,000 years old.
Magical Powers
Jewellery and gemstones were thought to have magical powers, a bit like we think today of some as lucky charms.
Bracelets were later worn by slaves to denote ownership
