Swimwear Swimsuits Bikinis
Swimwear Swimsuits Bikinis as we all know are all terms for clothing to swim in or lounge about in the sun. However people past and present whether they wore or still wear loincloths also swam or swim nude.
Roman women it is said swam in shorts and a form of top and bare midriff that could be described as the first type of bikini.
They did not call it that but read on and you will find out how the bikini got its name?
Victorian Times
Over the many hundreds of years attitudes changed. In the 1800´s especially in Victorian times it was looked upon as morally wrong to show the body. Even men had to have what we would consider now to be ridiculous costumes. Nudity of any degree was deplored. In 1860 men in England were banned from bathing nude.

War Shortages
However two piece swimwear for women became more common from the 1920´s. Famous film stars wore them and they really began to gain popularity in the USA during the second world war.
This ironically came about with the full approval of the US Government. It was because the US was short of material and as a result they ordered that 10% less material should be used in manufacture.
What To Name The Two Piece?
As time went on fashion designers got in on the act designing what was becoming increasingly popular. However they had a problem. How could they promote them? What should they call them? How could they make an explosive impact in the marketplace with a name that everyone knew?
They had no influence or input into the name but help came from the US Government even if they did not know it at the time.
Following the end of World War Two America needed to build its defence capability.
At the start of the war they had run down its defence capability to a very low and dangerous level. Brought into the war when Japan attacked Pearl Harbour they needed to build their defences.
One way they did this was, whether you like it or not, was to carry out tests with nuclear explosions.
Nuclear testing was carried out by the United States between 1946 and 1958 and consisted of the detonation of 23 nuclear weapons.
Where did they do this?
It was a little Atoll in the Marshall Islands in the middle of the Pacific.
You guessed it Bikini Atoll.
What better explosive impact on the marketplace than to call the two piece swimsuit Bikini. A name already well known at the time.

Nude Bathing. A Corking Idea!!!!!
Earlier we spoke of nude bathing.
One of the most provocative swimsuits was the 1946 Moonlight Buoy, a bottom and a top of material.
In January 1946 the Duchess Royal Moonlight Buoy swimsuit was introduced into USA stores.
It was very lightweight at about 8oz but the main feature was that it had a large cork buckle.
Articles about the suit in Life and Vogue at the time made a big play on the fact that the woman could tie her top to the cork buckle.
This meant that it would keep both parts of the suit afloat. Obviously without the woman in it whilst she swam nude!!!!!
Today anything goes dependent on the girl, lady or woman in question. From full swimsuits to the most scantily clad with thongs.
The question to ask is does it matter?
Fashion is what one wears.
