The simplest form of underwear is the loincloth and probably the earliest.
It is known that it was sometimes worn by the ancient Egyptians and it is also known that the Romans wore underwear.
Loincloths are still worn today in some warm climates as the only clothing. However in colder climates people needed other covering and it became effectively the under garment.
Roman men and women wore a loincloth or shorts and these were called subligaculum.
In addition Roman women wore a band across their chest and this was called a strophium. It was usually made of leather or cloth and could effectively be looked upon as an early ladies bra.
Europe & North America
Historically in Europe and North America up to the nineteenth century underwear was used as an extra layer of protection or insulation. However it also had another purpose.
Bathing was an expensive and time consuming luxury and it was to protect expensive outer garments from the body dirt beneath.
Spinning Jenny
In the 1700´s there were big developments in spinning and on 12th July 1770 James Hargreaves from near Blackburn Lancashire UK patented the Spinning Jenny.
The Spinning Jenny is a machine that he invented and was a hand powered 16 spindle machine for spinning wool or cotton.
It is said that he earlier worked on it with a colleague and that the daughter of the colleague was called Jenny and that is how it got known as the Spinning Jenny.
Mass Production
In the eighteenth century great strides in new inventions and improvements and the Industrial Revolution was born. It allowed factories to mass produce underwear and people bought them rather than making garments at home.
Fashion In Underwear
As it became easier to manufacture undergarments then over the years and centuries fashion developed. This fashion trend is so very evident today.
